Hmmm, its been 6 months that i don't update this thing...
And sorry, no Collages today... nor soon...
I've been busy taking pictures.
Went to Germany (Netherlands and Finland too) in August 2011 and bought a Fuji X100, after trying to take some pics with the Canon 5D mark 1 I bought in March 2011. The DLSRs are too big and the 5D has a bad high ISO (>800?) performance since its a 2004 sensor.

Then from September to December i stayed in NY, taking lots of pictures, mostly Street Photography.

So you may wonder why this 2D title?
Well, if you check all my collages, i was pretty stuck with 3D backgrounds / photomontage style for quite some time.
With this one i got back to connecting images by following paths between them.
Example: in the upper left, the tree merges into the mountain that merges on the upper right with the brown/bege limit. Others are there for you to find out...

Mainly selecting triangles & freeforms and using the amazing warp transformation feature.

Long time i don't try a digital collage (crazy, the last digital one was in 2007 with photos i took in boipeba - an island near morro), and the last times i've tried an analog one, nothing came out. i think i'm a little tired of making the same style again, so i tried some new directions...

my main inspiration was this montage by anatoly: "Persistent Pyramids".

obs: i've finally started to code my own website (in rails), hope to release it as open source soon...

RIA Sketching and Prototyping Tools

I'm really excited to see this soon-to-be-released RIA 'Sketching/Prototyping' apps like: Adobe's Flash Catalyst, Microsoft's SketchFlow (part of Expression Blend 3) (try-it here) and the open-source Fluidia.

I've just seen this Microsoft SketchFlow presentation and i really liked some ideas that improve what i'm currently trying to do with InDesign:

[~21min of the video] Easily create a component of anything to reuse on other pages . I like Master Pages, which is pretty standard, but the 'component' idea is really powerful. (InDesign does it, but here its faster)

[~27min] Add states to pages (i.e insert modal popups, etc): That's a pain to describe and show on static documents, with States you simply create the damn thing.

[~30min] Documentation: It creates a word doc of every screen and state that you can further describe... that's nice, BUT this SketchFlow app itself should have this, like powerpoint notes for each page/state [it wasn't shown, but it might have it].

[~37min] Sample Data handling: That's nice! it easily creates dummy or sampled databases of anything: photos, addresses, etc. I'm pretty sure that's easily plugged to the Facebook, Flickr, Freebase APIs or even connect directly to a DB.

[~42min] Behaviors: add & reuse interaction patterns (like drag'n'drop) just via UI (although you can edit the code).

Hope to try this three apps very very soon...

Reliable Unlimited Cheap Online Storage and Syncing Solution

So i've spend some time in the last weeks and months trying to find THE BEST solution for my problem. I have ~500GB of data that need a good damn Reliable, Unlimited Cheap Online Storage and Syncing Solution. Specifying:

Reasonable price: ~ 100U$/year maximum

Unlimited storage / bandwidth

Accepts any file sizes

Makes Backup of all my files (with versioning)

Syncs to multiple machines

Syncs external drives

Syncs just specific folders in each computer

Has shared folders (file-sharing with coworkers and friends)

Shares specific files via URL

Win, Mac and Linux client

Web access to download/upload files

I've searched many options, including the populars:

Dropbox

Mozy

Syncplicity

Carbonite

Amazon S3

JungleDisk / Rackspace

Google Drive (not yet released)

Diino

SpiderOak

And none of them have at least a big part of my needs. Here is the incomplete research template i did (on google spreadsheet). I intended to finish this list but since there wasn't a perfect choice, i stopped wasting my time on this.

The big issue is that:

The 'Pay by GB' Solutions (amazon/rackspace) are too expensive for 100GB+

The 'Unlimited Backup' Solutions don't sync (Mozy etc)

The 'Syncing' Solutions (Dropbox etc) don't really backup (they sync) and none has unlimited storage

So i decided to wait and keep:

My Work Documents: Dropbox (a free 2GB account) - which nicely syncs my computers

My Photos & Collages: Flickr - its unlimited storage, so i still need to upload my older photos

My Videos: Youtube & Vimeo

And on the External Harddrive: 100GB of Music and 200GB of Videos (documentaries/movies) - this NEEDS some online backup....

Wireframing and Prototyping with InDesign CS4 p1

Two years ago i wrote a post about how i used Inkscape to Wireframe & Prototype. Now FF to 2009: while inkscape's new version (0.47) is coming soon (June 09), it seems that some issues (like Font Styles & Master Pages) are still on the future roadmap. So i made some research on what people were using and found that InDesign CS4 (ID from now on) was getting popular (with Omnigraffle, Visio, Illustrator, Fireworks, Keynote, Powerpoint...). My final decision came with Nathan Curtis presentation: Unify your Deliverables.

Here are the main advantages i've seen on ID so far:

Master Pages and easy Embedding of other files (even indesign files, with the Frame Tool + Place)

Styles for Object, Paragraph & Character

But on the downside:

its very, very, veeeerrrryyy expensive - while inkscape is free & open source.

the file sizes are big and proprietary - while inkscape is a SVG: clean, lovely XML format that even notepads and browsers read

So i'll try ID out for a while...

FINALLY!!!!

After years & years of gathering songs and transfering from one HD to the other, today i have finally tagged ALL my songs!!

My biggest problem was creating/inventing the Genres tag, as you can see in the screenshot of my iTunes (that i hate, but i'm stuck on it in my mac):

So i've spend the entire saturday fixing the ID3v2 Tags of my MP3. I couldn't finish all (the 50GBs) of my 'YET_TO_TAG' folder. But i managed to do half, on the easiest, of course. (Using ID3-Tagit for Windows).

Today i tried to run into the big problems: Classical and Electronic (DJ Remixes).

And there is no ONE way to tag a song, no formal rule...

So after checking out some forums, i liked the idea of Kerensky97 on this post:

when it comes to:
Classical music I use the composer as the artist.
Pop music the performer as the artist.
And DJ remixes is a gray area but usually the DJ as artist.

Hopefully i'll remember this and 'fix' all my music...

Next part of my winter will be images with their IPTC Tags...

On my last post i was struggling because i couldn't see any relationship between the images i had (newest National Geographics).

So today, there i go again trying to use only the November 2008 edition of the Nat.Geo. but the collage was getting very very cliche: using monkey and chimps and making a 'human's destroy nature' collage, which i got really tired of doing. I want something new...

So while trying to make a collage these two images where together on the side, the drunk mexican and the primate (yes, i like primates). So i played a little with both and there we had a nice connection.

Always when i stay for some weeks (or even months) without making (or trying to make) a collage, the first hours (or days) are REALLY frustrating...

I just can't see any connections between the images...

Its ruff, feeling that you might have lost all your creativity and won't ever be able to make an artwork again.

Well, let me get back to my magazines, hopefully the first idea will still come today...

Winter is almost arriving here in seattle, and today i got a scanner working, so i'll probably try to get back to my smaller (<A4) collages...

As you all know, keeping yourself organized is still a pain. I made two collages in Seattle in this 3 months that i was there (now i'm in Brazil, but monday i'm back there). And after finishing comes the pain of documenting them: taking photo (at least i stopped scanning them), tagging, adding to my collages excel with sizes and sources, editing on photoshop, uploading to flickr, and finally posting them on this blog...

Last saturday i went to see Hariprasad Chaurasia at Seattle's Town Hall. The concert was nice, but could be better. I mean, how can i appreciate indian music sitting on a wood bench with 300 people while 4 musicians are playing and i'm listening through microphones and loudspeakers???

The whole way we are experiencing art today is bugging me.

On museums and art galleries its the same sickness, or worse, it must the prepared for so many people, that the whole experience is fucked up.

Last year i was in Madrid, went to Reina Sofia to see Dali, Picasso, Braque and company, and, for example, getting to the famous Guernica, what do i see?

People, confusion, talkings, no sofa, no place to chill...

Seeing Giacometi at Metropolitan NY (last year):

I mean, how can you appreciate an artwork that way?

Getting back to music... watching Radiohead at Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco last month, i had a similar feeling sometimes during the show. Seeing them 500 meters (no, i don't want to learn US non-metric system!) away, with crazy sound and many people around. Of course i liked it, beeing with my friends there and all. I had a great time, but as far as 'experiencing the music'? The real cool thing would be seeing them (and Chaurasia, McFerrin, Riley etc) closer without the whole electrical paraphernalia and crowd.

This is what i loved the first times on raves i went in Brazil, going to the chillout area at night in the woods with bonfire and listening a DJ playing a live jazz trio recording. That was a completely different feeling, even not being live.

The ambience is part of the experience!

Even movies [of course, there's no 'live movie' to compare], but is it really so much better going to the movies than watching at home?

Regarding music i'm sure there's no big way to improve the experience, but museums and art galleries?? Please!

A few weeks ago i started a new GTD method:

Get some Post its and Pen on your Bedside table

Write all ideas and to-dos down

In the morning, (physically) attach the post it to you laptop

Keep adding stuff and/or strike what you've done (most things on this lists needs to be done online).

My most beloved sports (or should i say 'the only ones i like') are Cycling and Climbing. In Rio i just cycled, mostly to work:

Here in Seattle i'm starting with both again (check this riding video). Hopefully i can manage them in rainy winter!

Now a new sport is coming into mind, flying. Yesterday i came across a basejumping video, which was (of course) an accident video (no, I won't link to it). I never found basejumping something very special. So much work and risk for just some seconds 'flying' didn't make sense. But the accidented guy (who broke a leg only) had a wingsuit, which gives you so more control to glide around. This wingsuit is something to consider!

On my collages, i'm always trying (managing this is a pain) to credit the source i used, not because of copyright problems, but mostly to show everyone (and myself) where the original cut up came from. It gives much more information about creativity and resources to make other remixes.

And here's an music example i run onto this week:

I always loved Moby's Play album. Specially 'Run On' (see the music video). I knew it was a remix of some other song, but always forgot to go after the original. Remember, 1998/2000 it was MUCH harder (and fun) to chase this info.

So i came across this great slow motion video featuring Johnny Cash's version:

After one google/wikipedia search i saw that both are based on a folk song called: God's Gonna Cut You Down.

Hopefully with semantic web this will all be done automatically.

Since end of june i 'moved' to Seattle. Probably my biggest excuse why i didn't posted anything here...

Here i already made 2 collages, which i'll post on flickr soon. Now i don't want to scan the images before glueing, so i'm trying to set a little studio (tripod & lights) to take great quality pictures of them.

I also had some trouble with materials, but Johnny (www.corridorsofmind.com) told me about Half Priced books which have LOTS of great books and National Geographic Magazines (Yes, i still use them a lot). Here is my first trip result to the store:

Another big thing is that my old PHP blog and site will disappear soon, so i moved my blog to wordpress and the site, which was mainly the collages browsing will be done only at Flickr. Someday i might personalize my site again, but meanwhile i moved to google sites (http://sites.google.com/site/iuri/). I'm also adding a Photos section there...

O corte da tesoura no papel da revista: prazer próximo à crocância palatável. Colagem, a princípio uma atividade tão jardim da infância, é na verdade uma técnica criada na China em 200 A.C. Chegou ao Ocidente no século XIII; passou a fazer parte definitiva das artes visuais no começo do século XX, com Picasso e Georges Braque; e mais recentemente, no final dos anos 70, entrou para o offstream ao ser abraçado pelo punk.

Para mim começou na pré-adolescência, quando eu mutilava Elles de mamãe atrás de imagens que pudessem ilustrar os fatos pueris que eu relatava na minha agenda (o blog de então). Após um largo hiato, comecei a criar situações com fotografias de amigos e pendurá-las na minha própria casa. E, então, houve a retumbância da arte-colagem perfeita: uma visita ao apartamento de um amigo me fez plasmar diante de cada uma de suas colagens, emolduradas por toda parte. “Preciso levar essa“, pensei. Hoje, “Ilha de Lesbos” é o eixo de meu muro de colagens - a relíquia, a peça primordial.

Iuri Kothe, o amigo artista, teve um começo casual, uma trajetória recente e uma evolução muito rápida - mas não a ponto de obscurecer suas primeiras colagens, já que seu avançado olhar estético sempre esteve ali, desde o princípio. A primeira peça, feita em 2003, aproveitou recortes usados para decorar uma festa e já continha a alfinetada ardida e a surpresa imagética que tornaria os trabalhos seguintes tão especificamente seus.

Iuri tira recortes quase que exclusivamente de National Geographic. O fato em si representaria uma limitação crassa ao artista comum, mas praticamente define o conjunto da obra do artista, seletíssimo. Seu interesse recai basicamente em pessoas, animais e paisagens, e em criar uma relação entre eles. “Muita gente simplesmente cola as imagens sem visualizar uma possível ligação entre elas”, diz Iuri. “É difícil fazer uma boa colagem sem que o artista tenha interiorizado aqueles elementos. Perde-se uma dinâmica que poderia ter sido inventada”.

Essa é a questão com as encomendas. Aconteceu de Iuri receber o pedido de um americano. A colagem precisava ter a ver com baseball, o cara mandou três caixas de revistas sobre o tema. “Provavelmente tenho mais revistas sobre baseball do que qualquer aficcionado brasileiro, mas foi difícil montar porque não tenho nenhuma experiência com o esporte”.

Com mais de 100 obras realizadas, grande parte delas “espalhadas por aí”, entre amigos e conhecidos, Iuri deixa escapar alguma saudade dos tempos em que sua técnica se limitava às revistas, tesoura, cola e papel cartão – estágio em que me encontro hoje. Com o passar do tempo, começou a usar computador para acertar dimensões e detalhes da montagem que ia fazer no papel; e logo entraria, também, pra turma das colagens digitais.

Em seu gordo networking, encontrei artistas puramente photoshops, com trabalhos magníficos, “mas não sei… fica tão parecido com pintura surrealista… perde aquela textura original de colagem”, argumentei. “Perde aquele tosco, né? Fica menos realista”, concorda ele. O contorno do recorte, o brilho do papel-revista, as pequenas imperfeições da cola entregam: um artista meteu o mãozão aqui. Na paixão e no risco, sem intermediários.

O que não significa que colagem digital seja menos arte. Talvez seja apenas mais recorrente na era da internet. “Dubroko 3”, realizada por Iuri mais outros dois de seus contatos virtuais, é totalmente eletrônica – e de cair o queixo. Cada um aplicava uma imagem e enviava para o outro, que não só aplicava sua imagem como eventualmente alterava as dos demais. Nesta animação, feita pelo próprio Iuri, tem-se uma idéia de como a peça foi feita.

Ainda assim, ele prefere a presença de espírito do artesanal, do feito à mão: o desafio de contar apenas com o que se tem, do tamanho que é, sem efeito especial, sem visualizações prévias. Também passou a preferir menos elementos. Sem dúvida, é bem mais viajante. Não só porque a integração de sujeitos se destaca como também as paisagens em segundo plano, que dão uma profundidade impressionante à cena.

Para realizar o desejo de fazer uma enorme colagem analógica, no entanto, ele talvez tenha que juntar mais imagens do que gostaria: mesmo páginas inteiras de revistas são relativamente pequenas para uma área mais extensa. Seria preciso um pouco de tecnologia – escanear as fotos e imprimi-las grande, por exemplo – e muito mais… cola.

Porque de resto Iuri tem muito. Até senso de humor para rir quando eu o chamo de avatar.

Long time i don't focus on my artsy site...
Happens i was (still am) working a lot. Went 2 times to USA and 1 to Spain (for work meetings) but of course i did some culture expeditions (in Madrid, New York and Seattle).
I took a lot of photos (btw i should add a new Photos section here, but know that they are all in my Flickr Photos collection).
My last trip was to Madrid (last week) and i came up with tagging my favorite photos. (btw2 i'm spending too much time trying to organize myself by tagging, managing photos, cut-ups etc... should try to take a break on this).
One sidenote: why the heck can't we take photos in museums and exhibitions in Madrid? Even Andy Goldswhorty's WOOD! Anyway, i obviously ignored the signs and happened to take lovely pics.

So now i'm back to collaging and below is a collage i'm for some months trying to finish (as it was yesterday):

On making music

I'm now trying to make two songs, one i started July 17th (9 days ago), using 'Arvo Pärt - Für Alina' cut-ups. And the other, March 28h (4 months). But i can't finish them...

I work with it for a night, than sleep over, try to listen the next day in other environment (while biking specially), than some days later i go add some and change other parts, but almost always i have trouble liking it as a whole.

One thing i noticed is that the songs change completely on different speakers and headphones. What i find interesting on the computer sucks, on the iPod or at my home stereo. It has to do with equalization, i think. Some beautiful timbres and harmonies simply disappear on some speakers, other parts get unnecessary focus, like some vocal percussion i'm trying out from freesound.

Probably this two songs won't be released. I'm pretty sure (today at least) that they lack in structure, are too repetitive (while not being minimal, as i wanted). But i'm learning... This remembers me Andy Goldsworthy (in the Rivers and Tides documentary) describing (during one 'implosion') that every time his egg-stone sculpture 'implodes' due to gravity, he learns a little more about the stone... then after some trials, he makes it.

I shall now try a new one, starting with Diplo's tip: "Start with the perfect bass loop".
Hopefully this will be a collaboration with Folopo, with our hibernated Ghiroma project.

exhibition in New Zealand

This might be the last exhibition place of the Human Artefakts Collages World Tour, which started in 2006 and went trough USA, Germany and is now in New Zealand.
I'm showing there 2 collages: 'SELF' and 'Human Alien Artefakts';

Some months ago, i saw this 2min intro of James Burke's - The Day the Universe Changed, and i simply couldn't forget this sentence:

"You see what your knowledge tells you you're seeing"

Later i came across Dan Everett's work about the brazilian tribe Pirahã. I advice you reading this article from Spiegel - Living without Numbers or Time. Here's a short sample:

"...His findings have brought new life to a controversial theory by linguist Benjamin Whorf, who died in 1941. Under Whorf's theory, people are only capable of constructing thoughts for which they possess actual words. In other words: Because they have no words for numbers, they can't even begin to understand the concept of numbers and arithmetic..."

Hm..., maybe some brain theory can help us out? Check this TED video, Jeff Hawkins: Brain science is about to fundamentally change computing. Where he suggests that "the brain is more like a memory system that records everything we experience and helps us predict, intelligently, what will happen next."

Another some-way-related article is V.S. Ramachandran's - The neurology of self-awareness.
Ok. I'm no brain biologist-psychologist researcher, but like you, i do have one and would like to know how it works...

WireFrame and Prototype with Inkscape

After spending some time looking for wireframing and prototyping softwares and tutorials, i realized that Inkscape is the best, fastest and easiest one. So here is a little tutorial on how i use it.

The only problem for me is that the text tool doesn't support underline and justification yet, but it will be done in this Google Summer of Code 2007 project. And running it in X11 on the Mac isn't so nice too, but there are also people working on this.

Opening inkscape will show you a blank page (portrait oriented). Go to File > Document Properties:

1 Adjusting the Document Properties

1.1 the Page tab:
- Default Units: px (pixels)
- Background: Double-click on the Background color, set the RGBA to ffffffff to have an white background when exporting the bitmap
- Size: Lets make 3 pages of a 1000x700 px site, with 100px between the pages, so the Width=3200px and Height=700px

1.2 Grid/Guides:
- check the Show grid box
- Units=px , Origin (xy)=0 , Spacing(xy)=10 , major grid line every 10 lines

1.3 Snap:
- this will depend on you, i use to change this many times during the work.

2 Layers

I tend to use only 3 layers: slice, content and basic (desc. order).
- basic: the skeleton that will appear on all pages, like header and footer (see item 3 - cloning)
- content: the lorem ipsum, images etc (see item 4)
- slice: just transparent rectangles to export the PNGs easily (see item 5)

3 Cloning (Header, Footer, ...)

Inkscape doesn't (yet) has master pages like inDesign, but you can tweak this using the cloning feature.
- Select the objects you want to clone, group them (ctrl+g)
- With the group selected, give it a nice name (right-click:Object Properties), Id: basicframe and Label:#basicframe
- Now go to Edit / Clone / Create Tiled Clones
- Go to the second tab (Shift) and set the spacing you want. Since we have 1000px width and decided 100px between pages, select 10% on the Shit X Per Column.
- We want 2 adicional pages, so select Rows, columns: 1, 2. And click Create.
Now one of the clones, is under the original (already selected), so just move the original down (shift+downarrow), select the clone and move it to the right. Down forget to upper the original again.
Also give the clones nice names (right-click:Object Properties) like basicframe_clone1 and basicframe_clone2

Observation: if you want to add more things to the clone (ex: an rectangle on the header), just create it and move this object (yes, with the mouse) into the group using the XML Editor (ctrl+shift+X).

Now lock the basic layer (on the Layers Window - ctrl+shift+L) to prevent accidents. Everytime you need to change something there, unlock, change and lock again.

You can download this basic wireframe template here (right-click and save as...)

4 Filling the wireframe

With the basic layer locked, select the content layer and make your stuff there: add buttons, lorem ipsums, lines etc.

5 Exporting to PNG with the Slice layer

This slice trick i learned on this youtube tutorial: Slice Web Page Layout (higher quality video here) by heathenx:
- Go to the slice layer
- create an rectangle on top of one of your pages
- name it nicely (ex: index, search, register) with the 'right-click:Object Properties'
- make it transparent: 'right-click: Fill and Stroke'. Stroke:None and Fill:alpha=0
- click on the rectangle, and then Edit/Export Bitmap
- select the resolution and voila!

Other tips:

Images

Don't vectorize your images, just drag'n'drop the image (jpg, png) inside the file and if you are going to switch computers, edit the XML to the relative path: images/photo1.png

Custom your Color Palette

This is a very important time saver. The default palette, on the footer of inkscape has too many colors. You can use the palettes presented like the "Websave22" (just click on the arrow on the right side of the palette) or make your own with GIMP (check this tutorial on the Custom Swatches or Palette).

I used only my photos (mostly from boipeba - bahia, brazil). I'm really tired of this copyright nonsense, locking for images i can use freely, gonna take more photos now again. A Nonlinear Rio Sampa Trip

Filmed on March/09/2006 with my old (and dead) Canon PowerShot A300 digital camera, during a flight from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo. I remember that i had a terrible hangover that day, almost stayed in bed. The song is Drala, from Glen Velez (i'm sure he don't mind that i used it : ).

And i edited it on Feb/13&14/2007 (yesterday and before, at night) with (the crappy) iMovie. Crappy because i realised during this edition that singleTrack editing is too limited. Example, the part that wents black (in 2min) is because i couldnt anchor the clips to the audio. So during the 'audio syncing' on the latter clips, it moved a little the backwards clip to the right, so i got a nice black gap there... terrible! Anyway, i'm trying to install Final Cut Pro here, hope it runs...

I used only the basic effects and transitions, and one that i specially love is the mirror effect. I've seen it many times, but one video that uses it the best (and yes, mine is a kind of homage to this) is the music video of Four Tet - She Moves She (see here or here). Mirror effect works very well for minimal music (i tried using other four tet, steve reich, but i preferred glen velez). Here is a screenshot of iMovie and its mirror effect:

This my first finished attempt to edit video and specially trying to sync it with the music. So i hope that with practice i can get my ideas into reality (and, of course, random beauties are also welcomed).

PS: Another related video i've made is Brasilia 360º (unedited but very nice).

image tagging (iptc, exif, xmp)

Like i did last year (or was it 2005?) with my music - because managing 90GB of mp3 isn't easy in the folder hierarchy and i the iPod needs the basic Artist, Title, Genre tags - this year is time to tag my images (photos and collages).

So i found some softwares that would to the job: Exifer, PixVue ... (more here). For now, the best one to batch rename is Adobe's Bridge (which i always found very slow and unbrowsable). This is nice because the IPTC tags are industries standard and written directly inside the JPEG or PSD file (not like iTunes and iPhoto!!!).

Another great feature is that the keywords (tags), title and descriptions are read by flickr! So i don't need to write the infos twice, and they are stored in the file!

Now i would like to know one nice cross platform viewer and iptc browser... something faster than Brigde please!

How to take a Photo of a Collage

thats the way:
- using 2 lamps (40W) making a 45º light incision on the image/collage/painting;
- the ladder i've used as Manual Image Stabilization;
- to further the Stabilization process i've made a 2s SelfTimer.
- Then, afterwards on photoshop you might use Levels>SetWhitePoint to make to white, white! (because of the bad light).

It (kind of) works like a charm, altough i prefer my scanner for the smaller collages. So now you'll see 2 bigger analog collages i've made on 2004 and 2005 (and hadn't worked out a way to digitalize them - they're framed!)

So that's my first laptop: iBook G4 (14inch / 1.2GHz / 256RAM / 60GB).
I'm gradually moving my dialy life to it (obviously called: iuriBook).

managing iTunes on OSX

ok, iTunes sucks, but since i don't have musikCube on my iuriBook (OSX) [will post about it soon], i'll have to get around with it. So i figured out how to manage my folders without iTunes messing the names (and having a Watched Folder).
On "Preferences > Advanced", uncheck both 'keep iTunes folder organized' and 'copy files iTunes music folder...'

So this way i can add my songs, the way i like (Genre/Artist/Album). And everytime i update my library (manually copying the song to my Music Folder) i just need to update it by selecting "File > Add to Library..." and choose my Music Folder.

So the songs that where already there don't loose their ratings. And i can move the songs around the folders and it still keeps track of them.

Collage_Panda

Collage, like any other stuff, really works only if you're inspired.
Two hours ago (0h00 of 09/16) i started one. Again, using only one Magazine, which was, of course a National Geographic.
So i used the US Edition of July 2006, which has nice Panda photos.

I took some photos during the gluing process, enjoy:

1. all images (+source) and material (glue, scissor, black 'cartolina')

2. Cutting the Panda's legs out!

3. Gluing the Panda (i'm using this as Wallpaper):

Reijseger Sylla Gueye Trio

iPod died and how i recovered it

Last Sunday my iPod (video) died. The battery didn't charged anymore and nothing happened plugging it into my PC. So i left it alone for 2 days and some minutes ago i checked on the iPod support website. Fortunatelly the First of the Five Rs solved my problem: the Reset function:

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

Nice, very nice! Just found out about GUBA. Its a VideoLog, similar to YouTube, Metacafé, Revver and GoogleVideo, but with a nice diference, you can easily find some Documentaries there (and download them too). Enjoy!

Finally i've managed to upload all my collages (finish the 2004 ones today).

Make some digital collages;

Just bought me a Canon SD700 IS. I'm not sure if this is the best one for my needs:
1. take photos of my bigger (non-scannable) collages
2. take photos without flash and not lookin' at the display
3. make short movies

But its surelly better than the Canon A320 i had until now. For 2. and 3. i think it will be amazing, but for 1., maybe a dSLR might do it. So check out my flickr in the next weeks to see if the photos got at least less blurred.

Kinds of Geniuses

Wired published an very interesting article about the two kinds of geniuses.
I'm not saying that i'm a genius, but the way i work, both on collage (images) and improvising on the piano, i'm an Experimentalist. I never know what will be the result.
Hopefully i'll be an Old Master, rather than an Young Genius (Nice to know that i'm going to get better, not worse :). So, as David Galenson (papers) discovered, (if) i'll get some money for my artworks, it will be when i'm older.

Selfness Art

I'm a big fan of documentaries and lectures; and of course free sharing of it.
So 2 weeks ago i downloaded a presentation of Jorge Cortell (thanks for blogging me) on this MVGroup thread (register to login), just because i was going (and went) to the iSummit, so i could learn a little about intelectual property.
I agree with Jorge's SELFNESS idea: that all of our works are selfness beings (like, for example, your son, you [kind of] 'make' it [with someone else], but he's not yours).
Really, if you make a song, it has it's own 'live'.

Speaking specifically on artworks now (don't know yet if it applies to science etc.).
Creative Commons Licenses are nice, but they still limit artists. For example, if i listen to a song and want to remix it, why pay attention to the License? We should be a collaborative society! Of course i will always try to show from whom i have remixed, so if one likes a work (s)he can go back to the original sources.

My advice is, don't read the licenses, just do your art.
So even if my artworks aren't on the SELFNESS license (it doesn't exist yet), feel free to use or remix it.

But how to get sustained by it?
Unfortunatelly our society isn't yet ready to the Donation idea. But as soon as electronic money transfer gets easier and more secure, i think it will start happening.
So if you like or use one's work you can easily help him/her to make more.

Ghiroma [Folopo and I (Felaiuki)] played our first DJ set yesterday (20060702) on the Projeto Mix Festival. The vibe was amazing. Check out the photos here.

e-learning with mp3 players

I'm sure 98% of the songs/stuff on everyone's mp3 player don't worth the bits they use. So here's an advice for ya all.
One great use of my 60GB iPod these days is to learn french on my bike ride everyday to work. The 30min lessons from Pimsleur is the exact timing for my ride, and i can repeat out loud the pardon's, bonjour's, excusez-moi's. Much better than sitting in a classroom repeating, reading and writing all-at-once. You just need one (and difficult) thing: discipline.
Very soon i'll try out some podcasts, like IT Conversations, but thats another post.

I just saw an excelent BBC documentary from their Horizon series. Its an 49min interview with Richard Feynman about "The pleasure of finding things out". If you're curious about: education, organizations, nature, chess, religion and quantum physics, you should definitely check it out:

Seems that you also use internet. What i do on every computer i have to use and i highly recommend you is to use the Firefox browser (http://www.getfirefox.com). There are plenty of extensions for almost anything you can imagine as beeing useful. Take a look on my list of firefox extensions.

Donation - the “new” economy

So now i've created an PayPal account (its the white button on the right column) where you can donate money to support me and my art. This "new" way of economy should really get more adepts, people gettin' paid for what they like to do and receiving how much the paying side has and wants to offer.

This is already happening with OpenSource Softwares and Websites like Wikipedia. Now its time to extend this to other business and specially to art. In electronic music this already started with netlabels like Thinner/Autoplate and some others where you can freely download and share song using CreativeCommons Licenses. And you donate how much YOU want and "think" he's needing. I'm saying "think" because none of them (art projects) shows how much was received and in what it was used like wikipedia does.

That's why i've created the budget link where i'll show what i bought, whom i supported, how much i received etc...

I'll use this money to buy art'n'tech stuff and to donate to other projects and people the i sympathize with.
